Basic Function:

Aramco Services Company is seeking a Managing Editor to join its 70-year-old, global flagship educational and cultural publication, AramcoWorld / www.aramcoworld.com. Reporting to the editor of publications and the director of public affairs, this is a leadership position at the head of a small team of staff editors and a global network of freelance contributors. Responsibilities include gathering, generating and developing story ideas; planning and producing both print and digital packages, and identifying and developing new talent. Your skills in journalism, mentoring, project management, quality control and policy compliance will be essential. You will also be responsible for occasional projects related to other publications and projects. AramcoWorld’s mission is to increase cross-cultural understanding among Muslim and non-Muslim cultures, and it is published for a diverse global readership. It has won more than 80 awards in the past 15 years. It is highly regarded among subject matter experts and educators as well as the general public that is its primary audience. The position is in Houston, Texas, with occasional travel.  

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Source, compile and edit content, and collaborate in rewriting to assure standards of policy, tone, accuracy, style, and professionalism
  • Ensure integrity and quality as established by editorial guidelines and policies
  • Source, coach, select and license visuals; guide photographers, videographers and designers regarding sequences, stresses, lengths, sizes, etc.
  • Review, approve, and modify all aspects of print and digital production in a collaborative, deadline environment
  • Plan, contract and coach freelance assignments in a variety of media; energetically maintain and cultivate freelance contractor networks
  • Meet with and maintain relationships with service providers who may become future bidders
  • Coordinate production requirements with the editor of publications, designers, printers and others
  • Review and, as authorized, approve costs and maintain budget
  • Keep current with developments in digital and print publishing, visual communications, journalism and current events
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or closely related field required; Master’s degree in the same with a Bachelor’s in literature, history, political science, area studies or related fields preferred
  • Eight (8)Eight (8) years required (six to ten (6-10) years preferred) deepbroad journalistic experience with magazines and/or  periodicals with at least two (2), preferably three (3) years of experience involving supervisory, editorial responsibilities, or equivalent demonstrated skills
  • Strong knowledge of professional standards applicable to journalism and publishing in the US, Europe, and the Middle East
  • Outstanding leadership, supervisory and interpersonal skills; a good listener and a creative strategist comfortable receiving input and guidance from diverse sources and drawing from that sound plans; able to address complex, culturally sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy.
  • Proficiency with print and digital publishing applications
  • Knowledge of the cultures, histories and politics of the Islamic world, broadly defined but emphasizing the Middle East and Arabian Peninsula, and the relations of such histories and cultures to the West
  • Excellent writing, editorial and organizational skills
  • Understanding and appreciation of historical relations among Western cultures and Islamic cultures; knowledge about Saudi Aramco and Saudi Arabia, the international oil industry is a plus
  • Familiarity with basic Arabic is also a plus, but most important is the ability to communicate in English at the highest level
