Director of Media Relations and Publications Editor

Coastal Carolina University is currently accepting applications for the following full time position: Director of Media Relations and Publications Editor (Public Information Coordinator).

This position is responsible for creating and producing stories for University news distribution and publications, academic programs, admissions and advancement support, student services and the University administration. Copywriting, editing and proofing are critical to this process, ensuring the University brand and messaging are consistent. Mastery of the English language and grammar is crucial. As managing editor of the Coastal Carolina University magazine, this individual leads the production of this quality semi-annual publication, overseeing the timeline to meet content and design deadlines, conducting interviews, soliciting stories, writing and editing articles.

This position manages media relations functions including but not limited to working with the chief communication officer in strategically managing media relations and the development of media statements, handling the day-to-day media requests, and writing/disseminating stories and media releases. This position works closely with the CCU communication team in preparing for crisis events and managing crisis communication strategies.

This position is responsible for gathering accurate information required to develop and distribute news releases/news stories through the University’s social media channels, responding to media inquiries in a timely manner utilizing a high level of customer service, utilizing AP Style to write, proof and edit University communication pieces, official letters, resolutions and scripts, maintaining a working knowledge of steps required to update the University’s main web presence and that of the Office for Marketing and University Communication.

Requirements: A bachelor’s degree and experience related to the development and dissemination of information material is required. Preferred bachelor’s degree area of study – Communication, English, Journalism or a related field. Master’s degree and at least five years of related experience are preferred. Exceptional command of journalistic writing and editing styles (AP Style) and English grammar. Extensive publication writing experience. Superior project and time management skills, message development, media relations and media event coordination preferred. Must be able to communicate clearly to graphic designers, printers and others to achieve goals.

Experience in crisis and issues communication management, working with national and or state news media in a media relations management capacity preferred.

A working knowledge of issues, trends and complexities of higher education preferred.
