Faculty Member

The Poynter Institute seeks to hire a faculty member with a proven record as a best-in-class contributor in the world of journalism, with particular currency in the modern media environment. Candidates should be experienced journalists with a record of success in deep reporting as well as short- and long-form storytelling. We are interested in hearing from journalists who have worked with data as well as broadcast formats and/or visual storytelling. We want to know how candidates are leveraging social channels and alternative story forms. We seek a talented professional who will bring enthusiasm and new ideas to support Poynter's mission to elevate the craft of journalism. The successful candidate will teach and nurture today’s journalists as well as shape tomorrow’s media leaders. Although the faculty member will work across disciplines — leadership, writing, broadcast, etc. — we invite the interest of those who bring credentials and national prominence in one specific area that may enhance Poynter's offerings and profile. We ask applicants to make a pitch to Poynter about what they might offer and and how their knowledge can advance the institute’s goals.

Poynter guides enterprising journalists, teaching them to take their ideas from concept to revenue-generating reality, and you’ll play a critical role in nurturing the ideas and encouraging the execution.

You’ll work as a coach and teacher in the world’s largest media organizations as well as have the opportunity to make a big impact on small newsrooms and startups. As a result, you gain an unparalleled vantage point of the news ecosystem.

Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years in journalism, with some track record of leadership
  • A record of editorial accomplishment and innovation in a multimedia environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency with cutting-edge storytelling and newsgathering practices
  • Familiarity with a range of leadership styles
  • Ability to travel frequently, including international travel
  • Persuasive writing skills
  • Strong public speaking chops — or the potential to develop them
  • Experience recruiting, hiring, developing and evaluating journalists
  • Commitment to diversity
  • Ability to analyze media business models
  • An existing network of media contacts
  • Strongly encouraged to be based in Tampa Bay
