USA TODAY seeks an audience editor to work in a fast-paced, 24/7 news environment. The editor will be part of USA TODAY’s audience team and will work primarily on social platforms and other digital platforms as needed. The candidate must demonstrate strong news judgment and have prior social and digital news experience. S/he will specialize in finding a wide audience for USA TODAY’s stories, photos, videos, graphics and other content, and optimizing them for different platforms. The editor will also do additional content creation as news and needs warrant. Candidates should demonstrate a strong understanding of audience metrics and engagement tactics. This role can include early morning, night and weekend work. It will ideally be based at our headquarters in McLean, Va., but strong remote or bureau candidates will be considered. Join a team of audience editors who work to develop a distinct voice that engages USA TODAY’s audience across all platforms.
Manage and program social platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit, Pinterest, YouTube, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, etc.
Identify our audience’s consumption trends and platform changes on key sites and adapt to changing habits.
Master analytic tools to make informed decisions about content and platforms. Track and share these metrics and best practices throughout the newsroom.
Work with reporters and editors on short- and long-term planning as part of larger newsroom audience outreach efforts.
Coordinate with social leads in other sections and social teams in newsrooms across the USA TODAY Network.
Coordinate with video and graphics teams to create content optimized to audience platforms.
Program other platforms, including native fronts and apps, and stay up to date on audience and platform changes.
Bachelor's or master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience
2-5 years of newsroom experience preferred
Excellent news judgment
Aggressive skills using social media for news
Native understanding of different audience platforms, their users, as well as content and strategy that works on each.
Top-notch writing and headline-writing skills
Excellent communication skills
Excellent copy-editing skills
Ability to edit and produce digital content packages
An understanding of social metrics, using them to identify patterns and develop strategy based on observations.
The following are not required, but preferred:
Multimedia experience (illustration, graphic design, video editing, building gifs, and/or motion design)
Reporting and writing experience
Off-platform and desktop programming
