Senior Data Reporter
- Spotlight PA / Philadelphia Inquirer
- Harrisburg, PA
We are seeking a Senior Data Reporter to join Spotlight PA, a new independent investigative newsroom in Harrisburg, Pa. The mission of Spotlight PA and its dozen-person team is simple: hold powerful private and public forces to account by producing investigative journalism that gets results and serves the public good. This exciting news initiative will be powered in part by The Philadelphia Inquirer, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and The Lancaster Media Group.
Ideal candidates will have a long track record of obtaining, cleaning, analyzing and executing accountability stories that cause significant change. We’ll want someone with a mastery of the tools of data journalism — additional programming, coding and/or design skills are a welcome bonus. Applicants should be comfortable with setting best practices for data reporting, as well as supervising and teaching less experienced reporters. Primarily, however, this reporter will be expected to be a role model for regularly pitching data-driven accountability stories while also collaborating within our newsroom and with partner newsrooms. We value innovation, creativity and originality, and we’ll want someone with an eye for telling stories in exciting ways across platforms. Some other traits we’re seeking include, but are not limited to:
- Persistence in requesting public records and negotiating the release of data, big and small
- Obsession with accuracy and experience bulletproofing data work by other journalists
- Ambition to improve and grow data and coding skills, and help others improve, too
- Dedication to clear, concise writing and ability to give and receive constructive criticism
- Respect for colleagues and flexibility to help the team succeed in any way necessary
We know everyone reading this job listing may not fit exactly what we’ve described. Some might wonder if their skillset matches what we want, and others might choose not to apply even though they know they would be great at the job. We encourage everyone who shares our passion for investigative reporting to submit an application and tell us why you’d be best.
Applications should include links to examples of work you believe best exemplify the mission of Spotlight PA and a letter explaining what change, if any, resulted from those stories.
Please include resume and clips in a single PDF document when you apply. There is also space on the application to share a link to your portfolio or other clips.
The job is full time, includes benefits, and will be based out of Harrisburg.
