The Poynter Institute is an organization with a lot of big ideas and talented journalists. We need a technologist to help us identify, solve, and execute those ideas and solutions in our new WordPress CMS and LMS.

Can you solve the bugs of today and anticipate the strategy for tomorrow?

This role requires both day-to-day troubleshooting and also strategic leadership of our technical roadmap. To be successful, this role requires an individual to manage priorities and be responsive to the changing needs/demands of the Institute. This role also has the ability to lead Poynter’s technical systems toward its future path.

When you think about design, do you think about more than pretty pictures?

We believe the user experience and aesthetic are as important as the function. This role doesn't require you to be a designer but you should constantly be considering the end user.

Do you want to create solutions instead of just solving problems?

Problem-solving isn’t just fixing a punch list. It’s delving into an issue, understanding functionality - for the public audience as well as the Institute, and working with our departments to develop solutions. Consider development as creative solution-making.

Do you speak Tech and are you able to communicate well in English?

We are looking for someone who can communicate technical ideas to non-technical people.

Do you teach others?

We are looking for someone who is collaborative and who wants to teach people how to fish, not fish for them. On a technical front, this translates to building solutions that our staff can maintain and helping increase their technical foundation so that we can continue to grow.

Here are some specific technical requirements:

  • WordPress frontend theme development or theme customization.
  • WordPress child themes
  • WordPress plugin development
  • troubleshooting Wordpress user access
  • programming javascript UI such as JQuery UI or Kendo UI
  • MySql database queries
  • Wordpress web services
  • mobile css development in WordPress
  • troubleshooting performance issues in WordPress and/or PHP 7
  • page layout design and control designs based on user requirements
  • developing custom post type development
  • JSON/REST web services
