The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, founded in 2006, has become nationally recognized for its innovative programs. The only public graduate journalism school in the northeastern U.S., it prepares students from diverse economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds to produce high-quality journalism.
As the profession continues to reinvent itself for the digital age, the Newmark J-School is at the forefront of equipping the next generation of journalists with the reporting, writing, interactive, technological, and entrepreneurial skills they need to find stories and tell them effectively. The school currently offers a Master of Arts in Journalism, a unique bilingual M.A. in Journalism for students fluent in English and Spanish, and the nation's first M.A. in Social Journalism.
Students are taught by veteran reporters and editors and learn by doing in the media capital of the world. A required paid summer internship gives our master’s students a head start when they look for jobs.
Reporting to the Associate Dean, the Director of Career Services leads a comprehensive professional development program for students and recent alumni - developing and directing the summer internship program, managing multiple resources for finding journalism internships and jobs, coordinating and undertaking career counseling for students and alumni, creating journalism career events and advice sessions with industry professionals, and supervising personnel in the Office of Career Services.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Directs the summer-internship program and oversees its promotion to employers and other partners; coordinates and participates in the counseling of students to help each find suitable internships; during the summer, manages the guidance of student interns and consults with their supervisors; regularly reviews the educational value of current internships;
- Plans and oversees journalism career events including an annual job fair, career panels, and workshops throughout the academic year;
- Brings individual recruiters on campus throughout the academic year to familiarize them with the school's curriculum and unique program characteristics.
- Meets regularly with employers to stay abreast of changes in the industry and to forge new job and internship relationships; maintains existing ones at online, broadcast, radio/audio, and print outlets;
- Represents the School to a broad array of media employers at professional events and to recruiters and prospective students at local and national journalism conferences;
- Supervises and participates in career-skills counseling for students and alumni; provides guidance on resumes, cover letters, internship essays, clip and website presentation, freelance-query writing, job hunting, interviewing, salary negotiation, and career planning;
- Manages online resources for students and alumni, including internship and job listings, employers' contact information, lists of news outlets that take student work, and updated links to online job postings;
- Supervises personnel in the Office of Career Services;
- Attends school strategy meetings and advises deans, faculty, and other staff members on the formulation of school policy and curricular enhancements to improve students' marketability;
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Establishes goals, objectives, and plans for providing career services; assesses and reports outcomes to management and the overall College community
- Directs overall operations of physical and virtual career centers, including staff, facilities, and technologies
- Plans and implements marketing strategies for identifying and cultivating a diverse group of potential employers
- Plans, promotes, and markets services and information to students, including information resources, career counseling, informational programs, and assessment programs
- Hires, trains, and manages full- and part-time staff as well as student interns
- Collaborates with other academic and administrative units to promote the goals of the career office
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Bachelor's Degree and eight years' related experience required.
A preferred candidate should have:
- Eight (8) years of experience as a professional journalist.
- Higher education experience in career services or related field; and/or serving as an internship program director at a news organization.
- Teaching and/or advisement experience with graduate students and/or interns.
- Direct knowledge of and contacts within the rapidly changing journalism profession.
- Highly developed research skills related to journalism hiring trends and knowledge of those trends.
- Supervisory experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and recruiters.
- Ability to work effectively within a diverse community, both inside and outside of the School.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends.
