The Wallowa County Chieftain, an aggressive weekly in very rural northeast Oregon, has an opening for a reporter equally at home covering hard news, sports and writing features and service pieces. Experience with and understanding of editorial photography also required.

We are covering seminal issues of the 21st-century American West, including rural economies and social issues, the urban-rural divide, challenges of tourism-related growth, and conservation of wildlife, fish, and rural landscapes. Wallowa County boasts a thriving arts community, and deep traditions in ranching and agriculture. We are the home of the Joseph Band of Nez Perce, and more than 50% of our County is federally owned. Wallowa County is at the end of the road, 80 miles from the freeway, and includes Hells Canyon and the Eagle Cap Wilderness.

Everyone on our three-person editorial staff works hard, reports, takes photos, breaks stories to the Web, and interacts with our followers on social media. Journalism degree or equivalent, an understanding or rural issues, and two years of experience reporting in the Northwest or a rural community preferred.

This is a rare opportunity to grow with a family newspaper company that believes in the value of community journalism. Full time position offering insurances, 401(k) retirement plan and Paid Time Off (PTO). Send cover letter, resume and clips to  hr@eomediagroup.com.
