The Chronicle of Higher Education seeks a thoughtful journalist and skilled manager to join its award-winning newsroom as a Senior Editor. Through day-in, day-out operations management and long-term project leadership, you will drive The Chronicle’s strategic decisions on how we cover the sprawling and vitally important world of higher education, delivering agenda-setting journalism to a uniquely sophisticated audience.
We’re looking for a dedicated and confident mentor and coach to both developing journalists and deeply experienced ones — an enthusiastic collaborator, an energetic leader, and an advocate for forceful journalism with a commitment to making great reporters even better. As a newsroom leader, the Senior Editor will represent the Chronicle both internally and externally, an engaged citizen of both higher education and journalism.
The right candidate is just as comfortable steering major investigative and narrative reporting projects as they are assigning and editing daily-news articles. They use sound editorial judgment to help reporters determine how to tell stories with maximum impact — which formats to employ; which key questions to answer; how to provide insight and analysis to a national readership; whether to go big, go fast, or both. They are fiercely committed to journalistic quality and equally eager to internalize and communicate strategies for building new products and measuring our success in building and engaging audiences.
Core responsibilities include assigning articles, collaborating with reporters on their story pitches, story shaping and editing, and work with all parts of the newsroom — including our Visuals, Data & Interactives, Audience, Copy, and Content Revenue teams — to produce journalism in a range of forms and on a variety of platforms. You will supervise reporters, manage their workloads and projects, and consult on hiring and strategic decisions.
We’re looking for an accomplished and collaborative journalist and seasoned manager with sound judgment, the ability to inspire, and at least seven years of editing and management experience at a general-interest or trade publication – ideally including coverage of higher education.
