Community news reporter

The Las Vegas Review-Journal is seeking a community news reporter to cover the Summerlin-Northwest and North Las Vegas-Downtown zones for reviewjournal.com and its weekly print View sections.

This is a busy beat that can drive significant online traffic. It requires a mix of quick online hits, news features, profiles and business stories. Some neighborhood-focused government reporting also is required.

The ideal candidate is able to quickly develop sources and produce timely content on important community issues and events. He or she must have initiative, energy, a strong work ethic and even stronger writing skills. The ability to recognize viral stories that resonate with parts of the community is a must. The ability to mine social media platforms for story ideas is essential.

The candidate will be expected to contribute to some cops/breaking news coverage for the Metro desk, which requires the ability to live tweet, write quickly for online with updates as events develop, and then make a turn for the final write-through. The ability to shoot photos and video from a smartphone is a must.

Requirements:

·         Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism or related field.

·         At least two years of reporting at a daily or community newspaper or website is desired. Some police and local government reporting experience is preferred.

·         Ability to manage a busy beat using strong organizational and communication skills.

·         Strong reporting and writing skills.

·         Familiarity with social media.

·         Ability to shoot video to accompany stories.
