The Vineyard Gazette is the prominent and storied weekly community newspaper that has chronicled Island life on Martha's Vineyard for almost 175 years.  It prides itself on a hyper local approach while being deeply reported, well written, and notable for its literary, intellectual, and sometimes iconoclastic character.

The Editor of the Vineyard Gazette is responsible for the weekly broadsheet newspaper, vineyardgazette.com, and for social media strategies and will play a pivotal role in evolving the brand to serve new readers across its platforms. He or she will succeed the paper's current editor who has served the paper with distinction for more than 30 years.

Published weekly in print and daily online, the Gazette covers the quotidian news and activities of the Island's six towns while also aspiring to provide in-depth journalism that tackles issues of importance to year-round and seasonal residents. Among these are the environment, land conservation, development, and the effects of climate change on the shoreline. The social, political, and economic issues that impact the Island community also merit ongoing attention: income disparity, public health, small business livelihoods, and an aging population. The Gazette makes extensive use of its rich archives to relate events in their historical context and seeks out stories and contributed commentary that illuminate the Island's diverse populations, folklore, arts, traditions, food, educational, and cultural life.

A proud journalistic mission, openness to innovation, and the year round New England Island lifestyle that define this newsroom leadership role also set it apart.  The editor we seek should bring an appreciation for the region, a demonstrated track record of journalistic excellence and achievement, and new vision to the day-to-day and strategic leadership of the newsroom.

The Editor reports to the Publisher, sits on the Management Committee, and leads a talented team comprised of the Managing Editor, News Editor, 3 to 4 full-time reporters, freelance writers and contributors, seasonal interns, and the company Librarian.

Strong experience as a journalist and a hands-on editor with a body of work that emphasizes news and public service journalism.

Career progression that demonstrates impactful experience in one or more local or metro newspapers and may also include editorial management roles in nonprofit or public media organizations.

Native (or fully embraced) understanding of digital platforms and audience engagement models.

The ability to provide hands-on, energetic editorial leadership and guidance to journalists at different levels of their careers.

Affinity and readiness to embrace the social, civic, business, and cultural issues facing an Island community such as the VIneyard.

Prior knowledge of coastal New England communities as a resident or regular visitor is preferable -- but not essential if ready to immerse oneself in this community.

The confidence and judgement required to make and defend sound editorial decisions to stakeholders.

At least 15 years' relevant experience is expected.
